Yes it is true a picture is worth a thousand words. The game Dixit proves it with a very intriguing game play experience. This 2010 Spiel des Jahres Winning game has over 1.5 million copies sold and has had several expansions come out to add to it. This review is going to cover my thoughts on the base game and Expansion #6, Memories.
OVERVIEW OF DIXIT
Dixit is a card-based game for 3-6 players. It comes with a deck of 84 cards, all with different images of surrealistic artwork done by Marie Cardouat. There is also a board used for scoring points, a rules overview for how scoring occurs, and marks for placement of cards next to the board for voting on cards. There are 6 scoring tokens that are wooden bunnies, and 6 sets of voting tokens in the player colors. In Dixit, each player is dealt a hand of 6 cards. The active player is known as a storyteller and will select 1 card from their hand, look at it and give a clue for it. The clue can be a word or phrase. The active player does not reveal their card. The other players then choose a card from their hand that best resembles the clue given by the active player and give them to the active player face down. The active player shuffles the cards and places them face up next to numbered spaces of the game board.
Players then use voting tokens to vote on which card they think is the active player’s. Votes are tallied and points are awarded. The best way to show how points are awarded is to show you how it is displayed on the game board.
Players then advance their scoring markers, which are bunnies along the track. All of the cards played are discarded and each player draws a new card bringing their hand back up to 6 cards. The active player moves to next player to the left of the previous active one. Play continues and the first player to 30 points wins.
In the game, the strategy is to give a clue that is not too obvious as to what your card is, but not too difficult that no one is able to guess yours. And of course if you are not the active player, then you want to choose a card that you think will get some votes so you get some points.
REVIEW OF DIXIT
Dixit is a very family-friendly game that has you thinking way outside the box especially when dealing with surreal artwork. Not everyone sees something in the images, but I think it will give a nice little charge to the imagination. Sometimes the cards in your hand don’t make a lot of sense, but hey you play one anyways and hope for a vote. The rules are easy and playing time is short, making this a great family game as well as something that non-gaming people can easily get into. I think the biggest thing that Dixit offers is an appreciation of fine art as the deck of cards features the work of either one artist or a team of artists. With only 84 cards in the game, you will see a repeat cards even in one play, so it leaves the game open and wanting for expansions, which there are several available. In fact, the base game box has room to accommodate 3 additional expansion decks. I think this game is a lot of fun and highly recommend it.
DIXIT: MEMORIES – EXPANSION #6
Dixit Memories is the latest expansion deck for Dixit. We get 84 new cards from the artist team of Carine Hinder and Jerome Pelissier.
What can we expect in Memories? Well the box description says exotic landscapes and sweet creatures. And yes they are in there. Take a look at the images:
REVIEW OF DIXIT: MEMORIES
So, 84 new cards………and to me the best expansion yet. From a production standpoint, we have nice thickness to the cards, very much in the same quality of the newer versions of the base game. All of the expansions give variety to the game, so with Dixit, the more the merrier. Memories to me, has such awesome detail on the cards. I really like the style of art from this team. There are nice colors and many of the cards have people on them too which is good. The images seem to have some sharper lines to them as well. This is a nice departure from the previous expansion, Daydreams, which had a lot of earthy and darker tones to the images and a hazy appearance to them…..which sort of replicates some dreamlike images. This expansion has cards that share a lot of similarities between themselves so it has an effect on the game play. I found that in playing Dixit using only the Memories deck, it was easier to choose a card that matched a clue over some of the other expansion decks. It made some of the voting a little closer as well. But the biggest thing is new cards to add variety to the game. Overall, I love the artwork in this deck and is a highly welcomed and recommended expansion for Dixit.
